Day 2

Optional excursion proposed: Guided tour of the Jacques Bockel Chocolate Factory.

Jacques Bockel opened his first chocolate factory in Saverne in 1992. Since then, he has been roasting cocoa beans and creating chocolate delicacies that have earned him multiple prizes over the last thirty years. Driven by passion and his search for originality, Jacques's goal of making quality chocolate more accessible to the wider population has earned him many customers and enthusiasts across Europe. The family-run factory welcomes you for an immersive journey into the craft of chocolate making, starting with a 270°-screen film outlining the history of cocoa farming followed by a guided tour of the factory itself. During the visit, you'll get to taste many of the specialties—including a delicious spread, aptly named Nut'Alsace—and you'll even be invited to help make a chocolate bar. After our excursion, we'll return on board the ship.

We'll spend the afternoon cruising to Lutzelbourg. As we leave Saverne, our barge will gently cruise the meanders of the canal surrounded by the heavily wooded landscapes of the Vosges Valley. Our route will be interspersed with passages through several locks as we glide through deep forests of native fir trees in a dreamlike atmosphere. Lutzelbourg, a picturesque village nestled in the mountains, is our destination.

After our arrival in the late afternoon, we'll walk to the ruins of the Château de Lutzelbourg. Sitting on a promontory at over 1,056 feet (322 m) above the Zorn River, the Château de Lutzelbourg is infused with history. Pierre de Lutzelbourg, lord of the city, built the fortress in the 11th century over the ruins of a Roman castle. The château was subsequently ruled over by several lords at the same time, whose wariness of one another led to peculiar additions to the castle architecture. Destroyed in the 16th century and restored at the turn of the 20th, it was finally listed as a historical monument in 1930 and has since been welcoming visitors who, on top of the cultural aspect of the site, can relish the exceptional viewpoint it offers over the valley. After our walk, we'll return on board the ship.

You'll be able to enjoy a great view of the fortress perched high on the nearby peaks from our barge moored on the canal in the very center of the village.

Day 3

LUTZELBOURG - Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane - XOUAXANGE

This morning, we'll cruise through the Valley of the Vosges Mountains, passing an impressive sandstone viaduct along the way, before reaching the Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane. This very unusual structure, the only one of its kind in Europe, was designed in the 1960s to replace 17 locks. Today, it only takes twenty minutes, instead of six to eight hours back then, to pull boats 146 feet (44.55 m) upstream.

Excursion proposed: Stop at the crystal glassworks.

We'll stop at the foot of the Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane to visit the Lehrer Crystal Glassworks, located within a short walking distance, to discover the art of glassblowing. Located at the foot of the boat lift for over 25 years, the glassworks is a family-run business specializing in the art of cutting crystal, involving many intricate steps that the craftspeople will guide you through during your tour.

This afternoon, our barge will take you through the most spectacular section of our itinerary as we cruise along the newest part of the canal along the cliffs, offering stunning views over the valley down below. We'll first go through the Niderviller Tunnel, a 1.5 mile-long (2.5 km) tunnel carved directly into the bedrock. Specifically designed to allow the passage of ships only the size of our barge, the tunnel took ten years to build and represented quite a technical feat at the time of its construction in the middle of the 19th century. We'll then go through a second, smaller tunnel that opens out onto the green landscape of the Lorraine plateau.

Tonight is our festive gala evening.
