A few weeks before Christmas, entire towns are transformed and decked out in dazzling lights. The air is filled with the aroma of spices, Christmas carols echo through the streets, and the lights sparkle with a thousand lights: it's Christmas market season in Alsace and many other European cities and capitals!
Alsace, with its picturesque villages and half-timbered houses, is the birthplace of Christmas markets. Every year for the past 453 years, towns such as Strasbourg, Colmar and Mulhouse are transformed into winter wonderlands. It's the perfect time to discover the region and its handcrafted products, unique decorations and culinary specialties such as pretzels, mulled wine and gingerbread.
In addition to Alsace, Europe's capital cities rival each other for originality when it comes to Christmas markets. Vienna, Budapest, Prague and many others are decked out in their finest decorations to create a magical, unique atmosphere.
