Other than serving as a military fort, thecitadel has been a monastery, redoubtable prison, barracks, and gunpowderdepot. The Italian princess Marie-Caroline of Bourbon-Two Sicilies was heldhere between 1832 and 1833 after she tried to overthrow the king and installher son as monarch. Several insurgents in the 1851 coup d'état were alsoimprisoned here. At the end of your adventure, you'll return tothe ship on foot.
